Public housing in Andhra Pradesh evolved as part of the broader effort by Indian state governments after independence to address urban shortages and to provide planned residential layouts. State-level housing boards were established across India to supplement the work of municipal authorities and central agencies, undertaking large-scale housing colonies, sites-and-services schemes, and rental housing. The Andhra Pradesh Housing Board was constituted in this context to function as the dedicated agency for organised residential development in the state.
The Board operates under the administrative control of the Housing Department of the Government of Andhra Pradesh. It is typically headed by a Chairman and a Vice-Chairman/Managing Officer, supported by technical, administrative and financial wings. Field operations are carried out through divisional and project offices located in major urban centres of the state.
The Andhra Pradesh Housing Board has contributed to the establishment of several planned residential colonies that are commonly referred to as "Housing Board Colonies" in towns and cities across the state. These colonies have served as instruments for orderly urban expansion, providing affordable formal housing as an alternative to unplanned development. Following the bifurcation of the erstwhile state of Andhra Pradesh in 2014, housing administration in the residual Andhra Pradesh and the newly formed Telangana was reorganised, and housing functions are also coordinated with other state agencies engaged in rural and weaker-section housing.
