The station serves Anandpur Sahib, one of the most important pilgrimage centres in Sikhism. The town is associated with Guru Tegh Bahadur and Guru Gobind Singh, and is the site at which the Khalsa was inaugurated in 1699. Because of this religious and historical significance, the station handles substantial pilgrim traffic, particularly during the annual Hola Mohalla festival held shortly after Holi.
The station is situated on the branch line that runs from Nangal Dam through Anandpur Sahib and into Himachal Pradesh, terminating at Daulatpur Chowk. The route connects with the broader Indian Railways network via Nangal Dam and Rupnagar, providing onward services towards Chandigarh, Ambala and Delhi.
The station is the principal rail gateway for visitors to Takht Sri Kesgarh Sahib, one of the five Takhts of Sikhism, and to the Virasat-e-Khalsa museum located in the town. It accordingly plays a role in religious tourism within Punjab in addition to serving local passenger needs.
