The station falls within the administrative jurisdiction of the Waltair division of the East Coast Railway zone of Indian Railways.
The station is positioned on the electrified, double-line Howrah–Chennai trunk route. Trains running between Visakhapatnam and Vijayawada, as well as long-distance services along the east coast corridor, pass through Anakapalle. The station provides access by road to nearby towns in the Anakapalli, Visakhapatnam and Kakinada regions.
As one of the principal intermediate stations between Visakhapatnam and Rajahmundry, Anakapalle handles both passenger and goods traffic. Its goods shed has historically been associated with the dispatch of jaggery and other agricultural produce from the surrounding rural hinterland.
