Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, commonly referred to as Amrita University, is a private deemed university in India with its primary campus located in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu. The institution operates multiple campuses across several Indian states, offering programmes in engineering, technology, medicine, pharmacy, management, and the arts and sciences. It is associated with the Mata Amritanandamayi Math, a humanitarian and spiritual organisation. The university is recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and has received accreditation from the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC).
Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham has grown from a single engineering college into a multi-campus university with a broad academic portfolio. Its engineering and technology schools are among the more prominent components of the institution, drawing students from across India and from abroad.
The institution traces its origins to the Amrita School of Engineering, which was established under the guidance of Mata Amritanandamayi, the spiritual leader and founder of the Mata Amritanandamayi Math. The engineering school was among the first academic initiatives of the Math, which has also been active in healthcare, disaster relief, and social welfare programmes across India.
Over time, the institution expanded its academic scope and was granted deemed university status by the Government of India. This allowed it to award its own degrees and develop an independent academic structure. Additional campuses were subsequently established in Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, and other states, each hosting a range of schools and departments.
Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programmes across its various schools. The engineering and technology programmes are offered at the undergraduate level primarily through the Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) degree, covering disciplines such as computer science, electronics and communication, mechanical engineering, civil engineering, electrical engineering, and related fields.
At the postgraduate level, the university offers M.Tech, MBA, MCA, M.Sc, and other specialised programmes. Research programmes leading to a Ph.D. are available across multiple disciplines. The university has established research centres focused on areas including cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, sustainable energy, and biomedical engineering.
The main campus in Coimbatore is a residential campus spread across a substantial area on the outskirts of the city. It includes academic blocks, laboratories, libraries, hostels for men and women, sports facilities, a health centre, and administrative offices. The campus maintains a largely self-contained environment, which is characteristic of residential university campuses in India.
Other campuses, including those in Kochi, Amritapuri, and Bengaluru, have their own infrastructure suited to the programmes offered at each location. The Amritapuri campus in Kerala, located near the ashram of Mata Amritanandamayi, has a distinctive character given its proximity to the Math's headquarters.
The university maintains central and departmental libraries stocked with technical and academic resources, and provides digital access to journals and research databases. Computing facilities and specialised laboratories support both teaching and research activities.
Admissions to undergraduate engineering programmes are conducted through the Amrita Entrance Examination – Engineering (AEEE), a university-level entrance test. Candidates may also be considered on the basis of scores from national-level examinations such as JEE Main. Postgraduate and doctoral admissions follow separate processes specific to each school and programme.
International students may apply through a dedicated admissions process. The university has academic collaborations with institutions abroad, which has contributed to some degree of international student enrolment and faculty exchange.
Student life at Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham is shaped by both its academic environment and its association with the Mata Amritanandamayi Math. The university encourages participation in cultural events, technical festivals, sports, and community service activities. Annual technical and cultural fests are organised at various campuses, providing platforms for inter-collegiate competition and creative expression.
The university places emphasis on value-based education, which is reflected in its curriculum design and campus culture. Students are encouraged to participate in social outreach programmes aligned with the humanitarian activities of the Math.
