Dhankar is part of the wave of wrestlers from Haryana who emerged on the Indian and international circuit during the 2010s, a period when Indian freestyle wrestling saw significant growth in international results. Like several of his contemporaries, he trained within the akhara tradition that has long been associated with the sport in northern India.
Amit Kumar competed in the lighter freestyle weight categories on the senior international circuit. He won a silver medal at the World Wrestling Championships in the 55 kg freestyle category, becoming one of the few Indian wrestlers to reach a final at the senior World Championships in his era.
He represented India at the Summer Olympic Games, competing in the freestyle wrestling events. He has also taken part in the Asian Wrestling Championships and Commonwealth-level competitions, contributing to India's medal tally in freestyle wrestling.
Dhankar's performances at the World Championships placed him among the leading Indian freestyle wrestlers of his weight class during the 2010s. His results contributed to India's broader emergence as a competitive nation in international freestyle wrestling, alongside athletes such as Sushil Kumar and Yogeshwar Dutt.
