Background

Patel was born into a Gujarati family in Mumbai. Her father, Amit Patel, is a businessman, and her mother, Asha Patel, was associated with social and civic activities in Mumbai. The family has links to the political and business circles of Gujarat. She studied at Cathedral and John Connon School in Mumbai before moving to the United States, where she completed her undergraduate studies at Tufts University in Medford, Massachusetts. Before entering films, she briefly worked in financial analysis.

Career

Debut and early success

Patel made her acting debut in Rakesh Roshan's Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai (2000), which also marked the launch of Hrithik Roshan as a leading actor. The film was a major commercial success and earned her the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut.

Gadar and 2000s films

In 2001 she starred opposite Sunny Deol in Anil Sharma's Gadar: Ek Prem Katha, set against the backdrop of the 1947 Partition of India. Playing Sakina, a Muslim woman separated from her family during Partition, Patel received wide recognition; the film was among the highest-grossing Hindi films of its time.

Through the 2000s she appeared in films including Yeh Zindagi Ka Safar (2001), Humraaz (2002), Kranti (2002), Parwana (2003), Bhoot Unkle, Vaada (2005), Mangal Pandey: The Rising (2005, directed by Ketan Mehta), Honeymoon Travels Pvt. Ltd. (2007) and Bhool Bhulaiyaa (2007). She also worked in regional cinema, with credits including the Telugu film Badri (2000) opposite Pawan Kalyan and the Tamil film Aaha.

Production and later work

Patel set up her own production banner and was associated with the production of Desi Magic. She continued to take on selective roles in Hindi cinema in the 2010s.

Gadar 2 and return to prominence

In 2023 she reprised her role as Sakina in Gadar 2, directed by Anil Sharma, which became one of the highest-grossing Hindi films of that year and renewed public attention on her career.
