Ambika established herself as a prominent leading lady in South Indian cinema beginning in the mid-1970s. Her career spanned all four major southern film industries, making her one of the few actresses of her generation to work consistently across Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada cinema.
From 1976 to 1989, Ambika was counted among the top heroines in the South Indian film industry. During this period she shared the screen with her younger sister Radha, also an actress, in a number of films, and the pairing became a recognisable feature of South Indian cinema during the peak of their careers.
Beyond mainstream cinema, Ambika took up roles in several television serials. She also appeared in an Indian-American English-language production, extending her work beyond the regional film industries.
Ambika and her sister Radha jointly run a movie studio known as ARS Studios. In 2013, the premises of the studio were converted into a hotel complex.
Ambika's sustained presence as a leading actress across multiple southern languages over more than a decade reflects the cross-industry mobility that characterised South Indian cinema in the late 1970s and 1980s. Together with her sister Radha, she contributed to a notable sister-pairing in the films of that era.
