Overview

Ambala Cantonment Junction acts as a critical interchange between trains running on the Delhi–Kalka line and routes branching towards Amritsar, Jammu, Chandigarh, Kalka, Saharanpur, Moradabad and beyond. Owing to its strategic location, the station handles a large number of mail, express and superfast trains travelling between Delhi and the northern states of Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir.

Background

The station serves the twin towns of Ambala City and Ambala Cantonment. Ambala has historically been an important military and railway hub since the British colonial period, and the cantonment station was developed alongside the expansion of the North Western Railway network in the 19th century. After Independence and successive zonal reorganisations of Indian Railways, the station came under the Northern Railway zone, with Ambala designated as a divisional headquarters.

Lines and connectivity

  • Delhi–Kalka line – the main north–south trunk route passing through the station.
  • Ambala–Amritsar section – connecting onward to Jalandhar, Amritsar and Attari.
  • Ambala–Moradabad section – linking the junction with Saharanpur, Moradabad and onward eastern routes.
  • Ambala–Chandigarh–Kalka section – providing access to Chandigarh and the narrow-gauge Kalka–Shimla heritage line beyond Kalka.

Significance

Ambala Cantonment is classified among the higher-category stations of Northern Railway in terms of passenger footfall and revenue. It functions as a crew-change point and locomotive servicing point for many long-distance trains, and is a key node for the movement of military traffic given the proximity of the Ambala Cantonment, an important station of the Indian Army and the Indian Air Force.

  • Multiple platforms with foot overbridges and waiting halls.
  • Computerised passenger reservation and unreserved ticketing counters.
  • Retiring rooms, cloakroom, food stalls and book stalls.
