Amarinder Singh hails from Patiala in Punjab and belongs to the erstwhile royal family of the princely state of Patiala. Before entering full-time politics, he served briefly in the Indian Army. His political career has been centred largely on Punjab, where issues of agriculture, federal relations, river-water sharing, security, and the welfare of farmers and ex-servicemen have shaped his public positions.
Amarinder Singh has been associated for most of his career with the Indian National Congress, holding leadership positions in the party's Punjab unit and serving as Chief Minister of Punjab. He has also represented constituencies in Punjab in the legislature and in Parliament during different phases of his career.
After parting ways with the Congress, he launched a separate regional political party in Punjab and subsequently aligned with the Bharatiya Janata Party.
As Chief Minister of Punjab, Amarinder Singh's administration focused on issues central to the state, including agrarian concerns, law and order, drug abuse in the state, and Punjab's position on inter-state matters such as river waters.
Amarinder Singh is regarded as one of the prominent political figures of post-independence Punjab. His career reflects several important strands of the state's politics: the role of established political families, the dominance of the Congress and the Shiromani Akali Dal over decades, and the more recent realignments that have brought new parties and alliances into Punjab's electoral landscape.
