Bose was of Indian descent and was born and educated in the United States. He pursued higher studies in electrical engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he later joined the faculty. His academic interests included acoustics and audio reproduction, areas that would shape his entrepreneurial work.
Bose served for several decades as a professor at MIT, where he taught and conducted research in electrical engineering. His teaching and research provided the technical foundation for his later commercial ventures in audio equipment.
Bose founded the Bose Corporation, a company associated with the design and manufacture of loudspeakers, headphones, and related audio systems. The company became internationally known for its consumer and professional audio products. In keeping with his association with MIT, Bose later transferred a majority of the non-voting shares of the company to the institute.
Amar Bose is regarded as a notable example of an academic entrepreneur, one who translated university research into a globally recognised technology business. His career is often cited in discussions of the relationship between higher education, engineering research, and industry, as well as in the broader story of the Indian diaspora in American science and business.
