Amaan Ali Bangash is the elder son of the sarod maestro Amjad Ali Khan and Subhalakshmi Barooah, a Bharatanatyam dancer from Assam. The Bangash family traces its sarod lineage over six generations, with Amaan representing the seventh in a continuous line that includes Ghulam Ali Khan, Hafiz Ali Khan and Amjad Ali Khan. He received his training in the traditional guru–shishya manner directly from his father.
Amaan began performing publicly at a young age and has since appeared at major Indian classical music festivals as well as international venues. He frequently performs jugalbandi (duet) recitals with his brother Ayaan Ali Bangash, and the two have also collaborated on stage with their father in three-generation concerts.
His repertoire is rooted in traditional Hindustani ragas, but he has also taken part in cross-genre collaborations involving Western classical and contemporary musicians. Together with his brother, he has recorded studio albums on Indian and international labels and has contributed to projects pairing the sarod with orchestral and chamber ensembles.
Amaan and Ayaan co-authored 50 Maestros, 50 Recordings: The Best of Indian Classical Music (HarperCollins India), a guide to landmark recordings in Indian classical music aimed at general readers.
As part of the younger generation of the Bangash family, Amaan Ali Bangash plays a role in continuing the Senia Bangash sarod tradition and in presenting Hindustani classical music to audiences abroad. His collaborative work has contributed to the visibility of the sarod outside India and to dialogues between Indian classical and other musical traditions.
