Alongside his playing duties, he was entrusted with leadership responsibilities at multiple levels of the South African set-up as well as in English county cricket.
Petersen represented South Africa in Test matches, One Day Internationals and Twenty20 cricket.
In South African domestic cricket, Petersen played for and captained the Highveld Lions. In English county cricket, he played for Lancashire until 2016. He also served as captain of Glamorgan County Cricket Club during his time in England.
In 2016, Petersen was banned from cricket for two years by Cricket South Africa for not correctly reporting the match-fixing saga relating to the 2015–16 Ram Slam T20 Challenge.
Petersen's career is notable for the breadth of his cricketing experience, spanning international cricket for South Africa across all three formats and senior captaincy at provincial, county and development levels. His ban in 2016 also linked his name to one of the most prominent corruption-related episodes in recent South African cricket, the 2015–16 Ram Slam T20 Challenge match-fixing saga.
