Furtado belongs to the political milieu of Salcete, a coastal taluka in South Goa with a long tradition of competitive electoral politics. The constituencies of this region, including Velim, Benaulim, Navelim, Cuncolim and Curtorim, have historically returned independents and candidates from regional formations alongside national parties.
Furtado has contested elections to the Goa Legislative Assembly, the unicameral legislature of the State of Goa, which has 40 members elected from single-member constituencies.
