Aligarh Muslim University, established in 1920 and tracing its origins to the Muhammadan Anglo-Oriental College founded by Sir Syed Ahmad Khan in 1875, has historically served as a major centre of higher education in India. To extend its outreach beyond Aligarh, AMU received approval from the Government of India to set up off-campus centres in different parts of the country.
