Before turning to cricket, Carey was an Australian rules footballer. He was named the captain of the Greater Western Sydney Giants in 2010. He subsequently returned to his home state of South Australia and began pursuing a career in domestic cricket.
Carey made his domestic cricket debut in 2013 as a specialist top-order batter. After an unsuccessful initial stint that led to him being dropped, he moved down the batting order and took on wicket-keeping duties, a transition that revived his career and ultimately led to international selection.
At the international level, Carey established himself as Australia's wicket-keeper-batter across formats. He has held leadership responsibilities including the ODI captaincy of Australia and the vice-captaincy in Tests, ODIs and Twenty20 Internationals.
Carey's career is notable for his transition from Australian rules football to elite international cricket, and for his role as a senior member of an Australian side that achieved a rare double of winning the World Test Championship and the ODI World Cup in 2023.
