The station is the principal railhead for Alappuzha, a coastal town on the Laccadive Sea known for its backwaters, canals, and the annual Nehru Trophy snake boat race held on Punnamada Lake. It connects the town with major cities in Kerala and across India through long-distance and passenger services.
Alappuzha lies on the coastal railway alignment between Ernakulam Junction and Kayamkulam Junction, which provides an alternative route to the older inland line via Kottayam. The coastal line was developed to extend rail connectivity along the central Travancore coast, linking Alappuzha and the surrounding region with the trunk routes of southern India.
The station handles a mix of long-distance express services and short-distance passenger trains. Direct services connect Alappuzha to destinations including Thiruvananthapuram, Ernakulam, Kannur, Mangaluru, Chennai, Bengaluru, and other cities, with several trains originating or terminating at the station.
As the rail gateway to Alappuzha, the station plays an important role in tourism, particularly during the boat race season and the peak backwater tourism months, while also serving daily commuter and freight needs of the surrounding district.
