Akurli station is part of Line 7, which runs broadly along the Western Express Highway corridor between Dahisar East and Gundavali (Andheri East). The line was conceived to provide a north–south metro alternative to the heavily congested Mumbai Suburban Railway Western Line and the parallel highway. Like other stations on Line 7, Akurli is built as an elevated structure above the road median, with concourse and platform levels accessed by staircases, escalators and lifts.
Line 7 was planned and developed by the MMRDA as part of the larger expansion of the Mumbai Metro network. Civil works on the corridor, including the viaduct and station structures at Akurli, were carried out during the late 2010s and early 2020s.
The first phase of Line 7, between Dahisar East and Aarey, was opened to the public in April 2022, with the corridor subsequently extended southwards to Gundavali. Akurli has since functioned as one of the intermediate stations on this route, serving daily commuters travelling between the western suburbs and the employment hubs of Andheri East.
The station improves last-mile connectivity for residential pockets along Akurli Road and supports interchange of passengers between the metro, BEST buses and auto-rickshaws plying along the Western Express Highway. Together with neighbouring stations on Line 7, it has reduced dependence on road-based transport for north–south travel within suburban Mumbai.
