It is situated on the rail corridor that connects the industrial town of Ratlam, in the west of the state, with Bhopal, the state capital, passing through the towns and agricultural belt of the Malwa plateau.
Akodia lies on the Ratlam–Bhopal main line, an important broad gauge route of the Western Railway. The section forms part of the wider rail link between western India and central India, with onward connectivity towards Mumbai via Ratlam and towards Itarsi and the south-east via Bhopal. The station is served mainly by passenger and local express trains; long-distance superfast services on the route generally do not halt here.
The station falls under the administrative control of the Ratlam railway division of the Western Railway zone. Maintenance of track, signalling and traction on this section is carried out by the division, which also manages neighbouring stations on the Ratlam–Bhopal route.
As a wayside station, Akodia primarily serves the local population of Akodia town and surrounding villages, providing access to rail-based travel for commuters, students and traders. The station also supports the movement of agricultural produce typical of the Malwa region.
