Akhtarul Iman hails from the Seemanchal belt of Bihar, an area comprising the districts of Kishanganj, Araria, Purnia and Katihar. The region has a substantial Muslim population and has historically been a focus of political mobilisation around issues of education, minority rights, flood management and economic development.
Over the course of his career, Akhtarul Iman has been associated with multiple political formations active in Bihar, including regional and national parties, before becoming a prominent face of the AIMIM in the state. He rose to wider public attention as the state president of the AIMIM's Bihar unit, leading the party's organisational efforts in the Seemanchal region.
He has contested and won assembly elections from a constituency in the Kishanganj area, and has also contested parliamentary elections from the Kishanganj Lok Sabha seat. Under his leadership, the AIMIM made a notable electoral entry into Bihar, winning multiple assembly seats in the Seemanchal region in the 2020 Bihar Legislative Assembly elections.
