Tripathi entered electoral politics through the Aam Aadmi Party, a party founded in 2012 by Arvind Kejriwal and his associates following the India Against Corruption movement. He contested from the Model Town Assembly constituency in North Delhi, an urban seat that includes parts of the Model Town residential area and surrounding neighbourhoods.
Tripathi was elected as the Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Model Town on an AAP ticket. He was part of the cohort of AAP legislators who entered the Delhi Assembly during the party's rise in the National Capital Territory, contributing to its successive electoral mandates in Delhi.
