His elder brother, Asaduddin Owaisi, serves as the national president of AIMIM and is a Member of Parliament from the Hyderabad Lok Sabha constituency.
Akbaruddin Owaisi has been elected from the Chandrayangutta assembly constituency over multiple consecutive terms, first under undivided Andhra Pradesh and subsequently under the state of Telangana, which was formed in 2014. The constituency lies in the southern part of Hyderabad and is one of the traditional strongholds of AIMIM.
Within the Telangana Legislative Assembly, he leads the AIMIM legislative bloc and frequently participates in debates concerning minority welfare, urban development in Hyderabad, and law and order issues.
