Padamsee belonged to the broader milieu of mid-twentieth century Indian modernists who emerged in Bombay (now Mumbai) and engaged with both Indian artistic traditions and developments in European modern art. Over a long career, he worked across mediums, including oil painting, and explored a range of subjects such as the human figure, the head, and landscape.
Padamsee's practice evolved over several decades, during which he developed distinctive bodies of work and contributed to the discourse of Indian modern art. He is particularly remembered for his painted heads and for landscape compositions that became closely associated with his name in Indian art history.
As one of the prominent modernist painters of his generation, Padamsee occupies an important place in the history of Indian visual art. His career, spanning more than half a century, contributed to the development and recognition of modern Indian painting both in India and internationally.
