Akaltara is positioned on one of the busiest east–west trunk routes of the Indian Railways. The Howrah–Nagpur–Mumbai line carries a heavy mix of passenger, mail/express and freight traffic, with significant coal and mineral movement originating from the Korba and Bilaspur regions. The section through Akaltara is double-tracked and electrified, allowing through running of long-distance services between eastern and western India.
The station primarily handles passenger and a limited number of express services, while many premier long-distance trains pass through without stopping. Local connectivity is provided to Bilaspur, Champa, Raigarh and Korba, supporting daily commuters and onward connections to broader networks across Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra.
The station is administered by the Bilaspur railway division, which is the highest revenue-earning division of the South East Central Railway zone, headquartered at Bilaspur. The zone was formed in 2003 as one of the newer zones of the Indian Railways.
