Ajna

Overview

Ajna (Sanskrit: आज्ञा, IAST: Ājñā) is the sixth primary chakra in the body as described in Hindu yogic traditions. Commonly referred to as the brow or third eye chakra, it is located at the forehead and is regarded as a centre of inner perception within the subtle body.

In these traditions, Ajna is associated with the unconscious mind and is described as a direct link to Brahman, the ultimate reality. Its name, derived from the Sanskrit root meaning "to perceive" or "to command", reflects its connection with awareness beyond ordinary sensory cognition.

The third eye, identified with the Ajna chakra, is said to connect practitioners to their intuition. According to yogic belief, it grants the ability to communicate with the world and is held to facilitate the reception of insights, including impressions related to the past and the future. As the sixth of the primary chakras, Ajna occupies a position above the lower energy centres and below the crown chakra in traditional descriptions of the subtle body.
