Ajith Kumar was born on 1 May 1971 in Secunderabad to P. Subramaniam, a Tamil Brahmin from Pala in Kerala, and Mohini, a Sindhi. He grew up in Chennai (then Madras), where the family settled, and studied at Asan Memorial Senior Secondary School. He discontinued formal schooling early and worked briefly as an apprentice in a textile and garment trading firm and as an assistant in two-wheeler service workshops before entering motorsport and films.
Ajith made his acting debut in the unreleased Tamil film Prema Pustakam (in Telugu) and the Tamil film En Veedu En Kanavar (1990). His first leading role came with Amaravathi (1993), directed by Selva. He gained wider recognition with Aasai (1995), directed by Vasanth and produced by Mani Ratnam, in which he played a romantic lead opposite Suvalakshmi.
In the late 1990s, Ajith established himself with films such as Kadhal Kottai (1996), Vaali (1999) — in which he played a dual role of twin brothers — and Mugavaree (2000). Vaali, directed by S. J. Suryah, became a turning point and demonstrated his range as a performer. Amarkalam (1999), directed by Saran, further consolidated his standing.
The 2000s saw him alternate between action vehicles and dramatic roles. Notable films include Citizen (2001), Dheena (2001) — which gave rise to his popular nickname "Thala" — Villain (2002), Attagasam (2004), Varalaru (2006) in which he played three roles, Billa (2007), a remake of the 1980 film, and Mankatha (2011), directed by Venkat Prabhu, which marked his 50th film and was a major commercial success.
Subsequent films include Veeram (2014), Yennai Arindhaal (2015) directed by Gautham Vasudev Menon, Vedalam (2015), Vivegam (2017), Viswasam (2019), Nerkonda Paarvai (2019, the Tamil remake of Pink), Valimai (2022), Thunivu (2023) and Vidaamuyarchi (2025). He has worked frequently with directors such as Siva, Vishnuvardhan and H. Vinoth, and with composers including A. R. Rahman, Harris Jayaraj, Yuvan Shankar Raja and Anirudh Ravichander.
Ajith is among the few mainstream Indian film actors to compete professionally in motorsport. He has participated in the MRF Racing Championship and the Formula 2 (FB02) category in India, and has competed in the Formula BMW Asia and Formula 2 international championships. He is the founder of Ajith Kumar Racing, a team that has fielded entries in national-level circuits. He has also been involved in promoting motorsport among young Indian drivers.
Ajith has occasionally taken up production roles, with his banner involved in select projects associated with his films. His career has otherwise been characterised by avoiding fan associations and publicity events, a stance for which he is widely noted in Tamil film circles.
Ajith married actress Shalini on 24 April 2000; the couple had previously co-starred in Amarkalam. They have a daughter, Anoushka (born 2008), and a son, Aadvik (born 2015). The family resides in Chennai.
Ajith has received several Filmfare Awards South, including Best Tamil Actor honours for Kadhal Kottai and Vaali, along with Tamil Nadu State Film Awards and Vijay Awards across his career. In 2025, he was conferred the Padma Bhushan, India's third-highest civilian honour, in recognition of his contributions to art.
Ajith Kumar is regarded as one of the principal commercial leads of post-1990s Tamil cinema, alongside contemporaries such as Vijay, Suriya and Vikram. His parallel pursuit of professional motorsport, sustained over many years, distinguishes him among Indian film personalities and has contributed to wider visibility for circuit racing in India.
