The Nagpur Metro project was undertaken to provide a modern mass rapid transit option for the rapidly growing urban region of Nagpur. The network is built around two principal corridors that intersect at Munje Square (Sitabuldi): the North–South Orange Line and the East–West Aqua Line. The Airport station lies along the southern stretch of the Orange Line, providing connectivity between the city centre and the airport precinct.
The station is located in the vicinity of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport in south Nagpur. It is positioned along the Wardha Road corridor, which is one of the major arterial routes of the city. Adjacent stations on the Orange Line lie further north towards the city centre and further south towards Khapri, the southern terminus of the line.
By placing a metro station near the airport, the Nagpur Metro provides a rail-based access option for air travellers and for residents and workers of the surrounding commercial belt along Wardha Road, which includes information technology offices, hotels, and educational institutions. The station also contributes to reducing road traffic congestion on the Wardha Road corridor.
