Background

Agra is one of the historically important cities of north India, and a major centre on the railway map due to its links to Delhi, Mumbai, Kanpur, Jaipur and Gwalior. The Agra Fort station, located in the older walled portion of the city near the Yamuna river, has historically functioned as the city's main station for routes radiating eastward and southward, while Agra Cantonment serves the bulk of long-distance traffic on the Delhi–Mumbai trunk route.

History

The station traces its origin to the expansion of railways in the United Provinces during the second half of the 19th century, when lines were laid linking Agra with Delhi, Tundla and onward to Kanpur and Allahabad. It later became part of the East Indian Railway and, after Independence and the reorganisation of Indian Railways in the 1950s, came under the Central Railway zone before being placed within the North Central Railway zone, which was formed in 2003 with its headquarters at Allahabad (Prayagraj).

Layout and services

The station has multiple platforms and handles both broad-gauge passenger and express trains. It serves as an originating and halting station for several mail, express and passenger services connecting Agra with cities across northern, central and western India. Suburban and intercity passenger trains on the Agra–Tundla and Agra–Bayana sections also use the station.

Significance

Owing to its proximity to the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort and other monuments of the Mughal era, the station is used by a substantial number of domestic and international tourists. Together with Agra Cantonment and Raja-ki-Mandi, it forms part of the cluster of stations that handle Agra's heavy passenger traffic.
