Adnan Sami was born to Arshad Sami Khan, a former Pakistan Air Force officer and diplomat, and Naureen, who was of Jammu and Kashmir origin. He received training in classical music and developed an early interest in the piano, an instrument with which he would later become closely associated.
Sami began his recording career with albums released in the 1980s and 1990s, performing ghazals and pop music. His album Tera Chehra, released in the early 2000s, featured the title track with Asha Bhosle and brought him significant popularity in India. The album Kabhi To Nazar Milao, recorded with Asha Bhosle, was another commercial success.
He subsequently moved into Hindi film playback singing and composition. Among his well-known film songs is "Lift Karadey" from the album Tera Chehra, which crossed over into mainstream Bollywood popularity. He has contributed songs to Hindi films including Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani, 1920, Bhagam Bhag and Garam Masala.
Adnan Sami is recognised for his speed and technique on the piano and electronic keyboard. He has released instrumental albums showcasing his playing, and has performed live across India, the United Kingdom, the United States and the Gulf.
Born in the United Kingdom and originally a Pakistani national, Adnan Sami applied for long-term residency in India and was granted Indian citizenship by the Government of India on 1 January 2016. He has stated that India is his home and has continued to be based in Mumbai.
In 2020, Adnan Sami was awarded the Padma Shri, the fourth-highest civilian honour of the Republic of India, for his contribution to art and music.
Adnan Sami has been married more than once and has children. He has spoken publicly about a major weight loss undertaken for health reasons, which received wide coverage in the Indian press.
Adnan Sami occupies a notable place in Indian popular music as a pianist-singer who bridged traditional Hindustani melodic sensibilities with contemporary pop arrangement. His collaborations with senior playback artists such as Asha Bhosle helped reintroduce ghazal-influenced pop to a younger Indian audience in the early 2000s.
