Adiramapattinam is a coastal town in the Pattukkottai taluk of Thanjavur district, situated along the Bay of Bengal in the Cauvery delta region of Tamil Nadu. The station serves the town and the surrounding agricultural and fishing villages. The area is historically associated with maritime trade and fisheries, and the railway link supplements road connectivity provided by state highways linking Pattukkottai, Thiruthuraipoondi and Karaikal.
Railway development in the Thanjavur–Pattukkottai–Ramanathapuram coastal belt was historically tied to the metre-gauge lines of the South Indian Railway. Following the all-India Project Unigauge programme, lines in this region were progressively converted to broad gauge, integrating the smaller stations along the Tamil Nadu coast into the broader Southern Railway network operated by Indian Railways.
The station functions primarily as a halt for passenger services, catering to local commuters, students and residents travelling to nearby towns such as Pattukkottai, Thanjavur and Tiruchirappalli. It also supports access to the coastal economy of Adiramapattinam, which is known for its fishing harbour and historic mosques and churches reflecting the town's mixed cultural heritage.
