Gourav trained as a Hindustani classical vocalist before moving into acting. He has spoken in interviews about his early years performing music, which preceded his transition to screen work. He pursued formal training in performance and worked in supporting roles before his breakthrough.
Gourav made his screen debut as a child actor playing the younger version of Shah Rukh Khan's character in My Name Is Khan (2010), directed by Karan Johar. Over the following years he appeared in supporting roles in films and short formats while continuing to audition for larger parts.
In 2021, Gourav played Balram Halwai, the protagonist of The White Tiger, opposite Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Rajkummar Rao. The film, produced and distributed by Netflix, premiered globally in January 2021 and received critical acclaim. To prepare for the role, Gourav reportedly spent time working in informal settings to understand the character's social milieu. The performance brought him a nomination at the 74th British Academy Film Awards for Best Actor in a Leading Role, along with several other international and Indian award nominations.
Following The White Tiger, Gourav appeared in Hostel Daze and took on lead roles in streaming projects, including the series Kho Gaye Hum Kahan (2023), co-starring Ananya Panday and Siddhant Chaturvedi, directed by Arjun Varain Singh and produced under the Excel Entertainment and Tiger Baby banners. He has also been associated with international projects, including Extrapolations (2023) for Apple TV+, an anthology series featuring an ensemble international cast.
Gourav is among a cohort of Indian actors whose careers have been shaped by the expansion of streaming platforms in India during the late 2010s and early 2020s. His casting in The White Tiger, in a role originally drawing wide attention from established stars, is often cited as an example of streaming-era casting choices that prioritise performance fit over established box-office credentials.
