Background

The university was established to address the agricultural research and education needs of the eastern plains of Uttar Pradesh, a region characterised by intensive cropping systems, smallholder farming, and significant areas affected by waterlogging, salinity, and flood-prone soils. It functions on the land-grant model adopted by Indian state agricultural universities, integrating teaching, research, and extension under a single institutional framework.

It is named in honour of Acharya Narendra Deva (1889–1956), a noted scholar, freedom fighter, and proponent of socialist thought in India, who also served as Vice-Chancellor of Banaras Hindu University and Lucknow University.

Academic structure

The university offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programmes through its constituent colleges. Major academic units include:

  • College of Agriculture
  • College of Horticulture and Forestry
  • College of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry
  • College of Fisheries
  • College of Agricultural Engineering and Technology
  • College of Community Science

Research is organised around directorates of research, extension, and education, supported by experiment stations and Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) attached to the university across districts of eastern Uttar Pradesh.

Research and extension

ANDUAT undertakes research on rice, wheat, pulses, oilseeds, sugarcane, vegetable crops, and fruit cultivation suited to the agro-climatic conditions of eastern Uttar Pradesh. The university operates a network of Krishi Vigyan Kendras that provide farmer training, on-farm trials, and technology transfer in collaboration with the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR). Areas of applied research include crop improvement, integrated pest management, soil and water management in problem soils, animal health, and post-harvest technology.

Affiliation and recognition

As a state agricultural university, ANDUAT is funded by the Government of Uttar Pradesh and is recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC). Its agricultural education programmes are accredited within the framework administered by ICAR for state agricultural universities in India.

Significance

The university plays a central role in agricultural human resource development and rural technology dissemination in the Awadh and Purvanchal regions. By focusing on the specific challenges of eastern Uttar Pradesh — including small farm sizes, monsoon-dependent cropping, and degraded soils — it complements the work of older agricultural universities in the state such as those at Kanpur and Meerut.
