AMET was established to address the demand for trained officers and technical personnel in the Indian and international merchant marine industry. The academy operates as a specialised institution focused on seafaring and marine technology education, distinguishing it from general engineering colleges and universities in Tamil Nadu. It was subsequently granted deemed-to-be-university status by the Government of India under the University Grants Commission framework, which allowed it to confer its own degrees.
The university offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programmes oriented around the maritime sector. Typical areas of study include:
Pre-sea and post-sea training courses for cadets and serving seafarers are also part of the academy's offerings, in line with standards set by the Directorate General of Shipping under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways.
The main campus is situated along the East Coast Road (ECR) on the southern outskirts of Chennai, near Kanathur, providing direct proximity to the Bay of Bengal. The location is suited to maritime training, with facilities that typically include ship simulators, engine rooms, workshops, and laboratories used for cadet training.
AMET occupies a niche position within Indian higher education as a university devoted to maritime studies. It contributes trained personnel to the merchant navy, shipping companies, port operations, offshore industries, and marine logistics, sectors that are central to India's maritime economy and to the wider Indian Ocean region.
