Choudhury belongs to the politically prominent Khan Choudhury family of Malda, a district in northern West Bengal. The family has long been associated with the Indian National Congress in the region, and several of its members have held public office at the state and national level. He is a younger brother of A. B. A. Ghani Khan Choudhury, a senior Congress leader who served as Union Minister for Railways in the government of Indira Gandhi.
Choudhury has been a long-standing member of the Indian National Congress and has been active in both state and parliamentary politics in West Bengal. He contested and won the Maldaha Dakshin Lok Sabha seat, which was created after the delimitation of parliamentary constituencies in West Bengal. The constituency covers parts of Malda district and has historically been a Congress stronghold linked to the Khan Choudhury family's political base.
As a Member of Parliament, he represented the interests of the Malda region, an area characterised by an agricultural economy with significant cultivation of mangoes, jute and silk, and a mixed demographic profile along the India–Bangladesh border.
Choudhury is regarded as one of the inheritors of the Congress political legacy of the Khan Choudhury family in Malda. His presence in Parliament contributed to the Congress's continued electoral relevance in pockets of West Bengal during a period in which the state's politics has been dominated by the Left Front and, subsequently, the All India Trinamool Congress.
