Location and setting

The station is situated in Abohar, one of the larger towns of the Fazilka district. Abohar is known regionally for its agricultural produce, particularly kinnow (a citrus fruit) and cotton, much of which historically moved by rail to markets across northern India. The town's position near the Rajasthan border makes the station a useful interchange point between Punjab and the Bikaner division's network in northern Rajasthan.

Lines and connectivity

Abohar lies on the rail corridor connecting Bathinda Junction in Punjab with Shri Ganganagar Junction in Rajasthan. Through these endpoints, the station offers onward connectivity to several major destinations:

  • Eastward via Bathinda towards Delhi, Ambala and other parts of Punjab and Haryana.
  • Westward via Shri Ganganagar towards Bikaner, Jodhpur and the wider Rajasthan network.
  • Through services connecting western Punjab with cities such as Jaipur, Jammu Tawi and others, depending on the schedules of long-distance trains halting at the station.

Administration

Operations at Abohar Junction are administered by the Bikaner division of the North Western Railway, headquartered at Jaipur. The North Western Railway zone was created in 2002 as one of the newer zones of Indian Railways, taking over the Bikaner and Jodhpur divisions, among others. The station's inclusion in this zone, despite being located in Punjab, reflects the historical alignment of the Bathinda–Shri Ganganagar line with the railway networks of northern Rajasthan.

Significance

As the principal railway station of Abohar, the junction plays an important role in:

  • Passenger movement for residents of Abohar and surrounding villages in Fazilka district.
  • Freight traffic associated with the region's agricultural economy, including the seasonal movement of citrus fruit and cotton.
  • Providing an alternative routing between Punjab and Rajasthan that bypasses the busier Delhi-bound corridors.
