Singhvi comes from a family with a strong legal tradition; his father, L. M. Singhvi, was a noted jurist, parliamentarian, and a former High Commissioner of India to the United Kingdom. Abhishek Singhvi was educated in India and abroad, and qualified as a lawyer before building a practice that came to focus on constitutional, commercial, and arbitration matters before the higher judiciary.
Singhvi was designated as a Senior Advocate by the Supreme Court of India early in his career, becoming one of the youngest lawyers to receive that designation at the time. He has appeared in a wide range of constitutional and high-profile matters before the Supreme Court and various High Courts. He earlier served as an Additional Solicitor General of India, representing the Union Government in courts.
Singhvi has been associated with the Indian National Congress for much of his political life and has served as one of the party's principal national spokespersons, frequently representing its position in the media and on television debates. He has been elected to the Rajya Sabha on more than one occasion, representing different states at different times.
Within Parliament, he has served on a number of standing and select committees, including committees dealing with law, justice, and personnel, where his legal background has been relevant to legislative scrutiny.
Singhvi is regarded as a prominent figure at the intersection of Indian law and politics. As a Senior Advocate, he is part of the small group of lawyers who regularly argue constitutional and politically sensitive cases at the Supreme Court. As a politician and spokesperson, he has helped articulate the Congress party's stance on legal, constitutional, and policy issues in the public domain.
