Abhinay Vaddi belongs to the family of the Tamil cinema icon Sivaji Ganesan, one of the most influential figures in mid-twentieth century South Indian film. This lineage links him to a long-standing tradition of Tamil acting families, although he entered the industry independently and after a gap of several years from his family's earlier prominence.
Abhinay made his acting debut with the bilingual film Ramanujan, directed by Gnana Rajasekaran and released in 2014 in Tamil and English. In the film he portrayed the mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan, whose work in number theory at Cambridge University in the early twentieth century forms the subject of the biopic. The role required him to depict Ramanujan's transition from Kumbakonam in the Madras Presidency to Trinity College, Cambridge, under the mentorship of G. H. Hardy.
Following his debut, he has continued to take on roles in Tamil-language films, working with independent and mid-budget productions.
Abhinay's casting in Ramanujan drew attention both because of his family background and because the film was among the few Indian productions to dramatise the life of a major scientific figure for a wide audience. The project was supported by institutions associated with the promotion of Indian mathematical heritage and was screened internationally.
