Abbas began his career as a model before transitioning to films in the mid-1990s. His early appearances cast him in lead romantic roles, and he quickly built a presence across multiple South Indian film industries, working in parallel projects in Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam.
His breakthrough came with Kadhal Desam (1996), directed by Kathir and produced under Mani Ratnam's banner, where he starred alongside Vineeth and Tabu. The film's commercial and musical success, with a soundtrack by A. R. Rahman, established Abbas as a popular romantic lead in Tamil cinema. He followed it with films such as Suryavamsam (1997) and Padayappa (1999), the latter a Rajinikanth-led blockbuster directed by K. S. Ravikumar.
In Telugu cinema, Abbas appeared in films including Priyuralu Pilichindi (2000) directed by K. Balachander, and worked in Malayalam productions during the same period. He also made appearances in Kannada and Hindi films, though his presence in Hindi cinema remained limited.
From the mid-2000s onwards, Abbas's screen presence reduced, with intermittent appearances in supporting roles. He has continued to be associated with South Indian cinema in character and guest roles.
Abbas is regarded as one of the recognisable young romantic leads of late-1990s Tamil cinema, a period that coincided with a wave of music-driven romantic dramas. His pan-South Indian career reflected the cross-industry mobility that became increasingly common among actors of his generation.
