Background

Mumbai Metro Line 3 is the city's first fully underground metro corridor, planned to connect Cuffe Parade in south Mumbai with the suburb of Aarey in the north, passing through major commercial, residential and transport nodes including Nariman Point, Worli, Bandra Kurla Complex, the domestic and international terminals of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, and the SEEPZ industrial area. The corridor is being implemented by the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation, a joint venture of the Government of India and the Government of Maharashtra, with financial assistance from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

The Aarey site was selected as the location for the line's depot and northern terminus because of the availability of contiguous land adjoining the JVLR, which permits the at-grade stabling, inspection and workshop facilities required for the underground line's trains. The choice of Aarey for the depot was the subject of extended public debate over its environmental impact on the Aarey forest area, and contributed to the broader chronology of the project.

Station and operations

As the terminal station of Line 3, Aarey JVLR is the point at which trains reverse for southbound services. Its proximity to the depot allows trains to be moved directly between revenue service and the maintenance yard. The station is configured to handle commuter traffic associated with the JVLR corridor, the Aarey neighbourhood and the surrounding suburbs of Goregaon and Powai.

Significance

Aarey JVLR anchors the northern end of a corridor that is intended to relieve pressure on the heavily used Western and Central suburban railway lines and on north–south road traffic in Mumbai. By linking Aarey with the airport, BKC and the southern business districts through a single underground line, the station contributes to a multi-modal network that includes the suburban railway, other Mumbai Metro lines and the Mumbai Monorail.
