Naren entered the Tamil film industry as a character actor, taking up roles that often cast him as authority figures, fathers, mentors, or antagonists. Before becoming widely recognised, he appeared in a number of films in smaller parts.
His breakthrough came with Vetrimaaran's Aadukalam, a film centred on cockfighting in Madurai, in which he played a significant supporting role. The film won several National Film Awards, and the visibility it brought led Naren to be billed as "Aadukalam Naren" in subsequent projects, a common practice in Tamil cinema where actors prefix the title of a defining film to their name.
Following Aadukalam, he continued to appear in supporting roles in Tamil films across genres, working with a range of directors and production houses. He has also taken up roles in films in other South Indian languages on occasion.
Naren is part of a generation of Tamil character actors whose work has gained prominence alongside the rise of realist and rural-set cinema in Tamil Nadu during the 2010s. His screen-name convention reflects a long-standing tradition in Tamil and Telugu cinema of associating actors with their landmark films.
