Anil Kumar belongs to Kerala's Congress political tradition and has been associated with the party's organisational and electoral work in the Malabar region. His political base lies in the Wandoor Assembly constituency, which is a reserved (SC) seat in Malappuram district adjoining Wayanad.
Anil Kumar has been elected to the Kerala Legislative Assembly from the Wandoor constituency on the Indian National Congress ticket. In this capacity he was associated with departments dealing with the welfare of Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and other backward communities, as well as related social-justice programmes implemented by the Government of Kerala.
