Namassivayam's political career has been rooted in the Union Territory of Puducherry, a small but politically active region on the south-eastern coast of India that includes the districts of Puducherry, Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam. Politics in the territory has historically been shaped by the Indian National Congress, the All India N.R. Congress, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, and more recently the Bharatiya Janata Party.
Namassivayam was elected to the Puducherry Legislative Assembly as a member of the Indian National Congress and held organisational responsibilities within the party in the territory. He served as a minister in the Government of Puducherry, handling portfolios assigned to him during his tenure.
He later moved from the Indian National Congress to the Bharatiya Janata Party, a transition that took place in the run-up to the change of government in Puducherry. Following this realignment, he continued in active electoral politics and was inducted into the council of ministers in the subsequent BJP-led coalition government in the territory.
As a long-serving legislator and minister in a small Union Territory, Namassivayam is among the political figures whose careers illustrate the shifting alliances that characterise Puducherry's legislative politics. His move from the Congress to the BJP was part of a wider realignment that reshaped the territory's government.
