AJ Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Centre is a private medical college and teaching hospital located in Mangaluru, Karnataka, India. The institution offers undergraduate and postgraduate medical education and is affiliated to Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS), the principal affiliating university for health sciences colleges across Karnataka. The college operates alongside AJ Hospital and Research Centre, which serves as its primary clinical training facility, providing students with hands-on exposure to a wide range of medical specialities and patient care settings.
Mangaluru, situated on the southwestern coast of Karnataka along the Arabian Sea, is a significant educational and healthcare hub in the Tulu Nadu region. The city hosts several medical, engineering, and professional institutions, making it an established destination for higher education in coastal Karnataka.
The institution offers the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree at the undergraduate level, following the curriculum prescribed by the National Medical Commission (NMC) and RGUHS. The MBBS programme is structured across a period of four and a half years of academic study followed by a compulsory rotating internship of one year, during which students rotate through various clinical departments of the attached teaching hospital.
At the postgraduate level, the college offers MD and MS degree programmes across several clinical and non-clinical specialities, enabling graduates to pursue specialisation in disciplines such as general medicine, surgery, paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology, orthopaedics, anaesthesiology, pathology, and others, subject to available seats and regulatory approvals in any given academic year.
The academic calendar, examination schedules, and degree conferment are governed by RGUHS, Bengaluru. The institution is required to maintain standards set by the NMC with respect to faculty strength, infrastructure, and clinical material.
AJ Hospital and Research Centre functions as the teaching hospital attached to the medical college. The hospital provides clinical training across departments including general medicine, general surgery, paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology, orthopaedics, ophthalmology, ear nose and throat (ENT), dermatology, psychiatry, radiology, and emergency medicine, among others.
The hospital serves both as a tertiary care referral centre for the Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts and as a training ground for medical students and postgraduate residents. The integration of a functioning multi-speciality hospital with the academic institution is a requirement under NMC norms and ensures that students receive adequate clinical exposure throughout their training.
The campus houses lecture halls, dissection halls, laboratories for pre-clinical and para-clinical departments, a central library with medical journals and reference texts, and residential facilities for students and staff. Departments such as anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, pathology, microbiology, forensic medicine, and pharmacology maintain dedicated laboratory spaces in accordance with regulatory requirements.
The library provides access to digital medical databases and journals, supporting both academic study and research activity. Hostel accommodation is available separately for male and female students on or near the campus.
Admission to the MBBS programme is conducted through the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET-UG), which is the single national entrance examination for undergraduate medical admissions in India, as mandated by the NMC. Seats are filled through the centralised counselling process administered by the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) for All India Quota seats, and by the Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA) for state quota seats. Postgraduate admissions are similarly conducted through NEET-PG followed by centralised counselling.
Students at the institution participate in academic societies, cultural events, and sports activities organised through the college. Medical students' associations affiliated to bodies such as The Indian Medical Association (IMA) and the Medical Students' Association of India (MSAI) are active in many Karnataka medical colleges, and students at AJ Institute engage in community health outreach and awareness programmes as part of their social responsibilities under the MBBS curriculum.
