Overview

APMC station functions as the southern terminus of the Red Line of the Ahmedabad Metro. The line runs broadly in a north–south alignment connecting APMC in the south with Motera Stadium in the north, passing through key interchange points in central Ahmedabad. The station takes its name from the Agricultural Produce Market Committee yard located in the vicinity, one of the principal wholesale agricultural markets of the city.

Background

The Ahmedabad Metro is operated by the Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation (GMRC), a state government undertaking responsible for planning and implementing metro rail systems in Gujarat. Phase 1 of the Ahmedabad Metro comprises two lines: the Blue Line, running east to west between Thaltej and Vastral Gam, and the Red Line, running north to south between Motera Stadium and APMC.

Phase 1 of the project was inaugurated by the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, on 30 September 2022, with public services on the operational sections of both lines beginning shortly thereafter. APMC station was opened as part of this rollout.

Location and connectivity

The station is located in the southern part of Ahmedabad, close to the APMC market complex in Vasna. It serves commuters from the surrounding residential and trading neighbourhoods. As a terminus, it allows passengers to board services running north towards the central business district, the Sabarmati Riverfront area, and onward to Motera.

Interchange

While APMC itself is a terminal station and not an interchange, passengers can transfer between the Red and Blue lines of the Ahmedabad Metro at intermediate interchange stations along the Red Line corridor.

Significance

The station provides organised public transport access to one of Ahmedabad's major agricultural wholesale markets and to the densely populated southern neighbourhoods of the city. By acting as the southern anchor of the Red Line, it extends the reach of the metro network beyond the central city and supports the broader objective of reducing road congestion in Ahmedabad.
