The All India Institutes of Medical Sciences are a group of autonomous medical colleges of higher education established by the Indian Parliament with the aim of developing patterns of teaching in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education and bringing together educational facilities of the highest order. Following the success of AIIMS, New Delhi, the Government of India announced the creation of additional AIIMS in different states under the PMSSY, launched in 2003, to correct regional imbalances in the availability of affordable and reliable tertiary healthcare.
AIIMS Awantipora was announced as part of a later phase of expansion of the PMSSY, intended to serve the Kashmir Valley. A second AIIMS for Jammu and Kashmir was announced for Vijaypur in the Jammu region, giving the union territory two such institutions, one each for the Kashmir and Jammu divisions.
The institute is located at Awantipora, a town along the Srinagar–Jammu National Highway in Pulwama district. The site was selected for its central position in the Kashmir Valley and its connectivity to Srinagar, Anantnag and other districts of south Kashmir. The campus is being developed with academic blocks, hospital facilities, residential quarters for faculty and students, and ancillary infrastructure typical of AIIMS institutions.
AIIMS institutions typically offer undergraduate (MBBS), postgraduate (MD, MS, DM, MCh) and nursing programmes, along with a tertiary care teaching hospital that provides outpatient, inpatient and specialised clinical services across a wide range of disciplines. AIIMS Awantipora is being developed along similar lines, with the objective of providing super-specialty healthcare and medical education to the population of the Kashmir Valley.
The establishment of AIIMS Awantipora is significant for the Kashmir region as it is expected to reduce the need for patients to travel outside the valley for advanced medical care, generate employment in healthcare and allied sectors, and provide additional capacity for medical training in Jammu and Kashmir alongside existing institutions such as the Government Medical College, Srinagar and the Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences.
