3i Infotech was originally promoted by ICICI group as a technology services arm catering primarily to the financial services industry. Over time, the company expanded beyond its parent's ecosystem to serve external clients across banking, insurance, capital markets, manufacturing, retail and the public sector. Its portfolio has historically combined proprietary software products with services such as application development, infrastructure management, transaction processing and IT-enabled services.
The company grew rapidly during the 2000s through a series of acquisitions in India and overseas, broadening both its product suite and its geographical footprint into markets such as the United States, the United Kingdom, West Asia, Africa and the Asia-Pacific region. The acquisition-led expansion increased revenue but also added significant debt to the balance sheet.
Following the global financial downturn and stress on its leveraged growth model, 3i Infotech undertook a debt restructuring exercise and divested several non-core businesses, including parts of its overseas operations, in order to reduce liabilities and refocus on core product and service lines. In subsequent years the company repositioned itself around digital services, cloud, and managed IT offerings.
3i Infotech operates through delivery centres in India and offices across multiple countries, providing onshore, offshore and nearshore services. Its client base spans private and public sector banks, insurers, government agencies and enterprise customers.
As one of the early Indian IT companies to emerge from a large domestic financial group, 3i Infotech is often cited as an example of the close interlinkage between Indian banking institutions and the country's software products industry. Its trajectory — from rapid acquisition-driven growth to financial restructuring and a renewed focus on digital services — also reflects broader trends among mid-sized Indian IT firms during the 2000s and 2010s.
