Gogolá

Gogolá is a small coastal town in the Diu district of the Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu, in western India. Situated on the Diu island near the southern coast of the Kathiawar peninsula in Gujarat, it is one of several settlements that lie within the compact territory of Diu.

Geography

Gogolá lies on Diu island, a small island connected to the Gujarat mainland by bridges. The island is bounded by the Arabian Sea to the south and a tidal creek separating it from the Saurashtra coast to the north. Like the rest of Diu, Gogolá experiences a coastal climate with hot summers, a moderate monsoon, and mild winters typical of the Kathiawar littoral.

Background

Diu, including Gogolá, was a Portuguese overseas possession from the sixteenth century until 1961, when it was integrated into the Indian Union following Operation Vijay. The Portuguese legacy is reflected in the local toponymy, including the accented form Gogolá, as well as in the architectural and cultural fabric of the wider Diu region.

After 1961, Diu was administered as part of the Union Territory of Goa, Daman and Diu. Following the statehood of Goa in 1987, Daman and Diu became a separate Union Territory. In 2020, Daman and Diu was merged with Dadra and Nagar Haveli to form the present Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu.

Administration

Gogolá falls under the administrative jurisdiction of the Diu district. Civic and revenue functions are handled through the district administration headquartered at Diu town.

Significance

Gogolá is recognised primarily for its coastal setting and its place within the broader heritage zone of Diu, a region noted for its Portuguese-era forts, churches and seafront. The town forms part of the cluster of settlements that contribute to Diu district's tourism-oriented economy, alongside fishing and small-scale trade typical of the area.
